Time keeps on slipping...into the future!

One of the prophets from my high school years, Steve Miller, said, "Time keeps on slipping, slipping, slipping...into the future."  The future. What a great place to be!

We humans are strange people. We acknowledge and celebrate the personal passing of time with birthdays & anniversaries. We celebrate the passing of time in general by watching on TV or in person, as a giant disco ball drops in Times Square, NY. Yet, we hate the passing of time in terms of the physical effects it has on our body. We spend billion$ holding it at bay or hiding it.

The truth is, we can't do much to change the properties of time. It keeps moving into the future. But something that people keep forgetting is that God keeps moving into the future, too! We are mistaken if we think God is in the past. How often have we tried to recapture the good old days or nostalgically longed for a time we thought was better. I can't prove this but my observation of humans is that the past begins to look better in light of our disappointing present and uncertain future. People rewrite history such that they wish they could go back, often denying mistakes they made, doomed to repeat them over and over. Even though the future keeps coming at us, we can become trapped in the past.

Don't be afraid of the future. "Don't be afraid." Those were the words spoken by a messenger from another dimension, maybe the future. The ancient scriptures tells us that an angel announced that God was entering into the humanity's present and that we were to not be afraid because it was really, really good news! (Luke chapter 2) But God did not stay trapped in that moment, as awesome as it was,  but rather keeps moving into the future and He is never more than a heartbeat away from where and when you are, right now.

But the last thing I want to say to you in 2015 is that the future is awesome! I've been there. Here's a secret... the future can be changed. Some of you are afraid of the future because you think it will be worse than the present and never as good as the past. You're wrong. Yes, a dark future could be coming at you right now, but the future can be changed... and the best way to change it is to create it!

And that is what I want to talk to you about in 2016 - how to become the architect of your own future and more importantly, how to find God in your future. He's there, waiting for you!

Here's what my future will look like in 2016 - I found this picture deep in the past. It's from a letter written to a church in the ancient region of Phrygia . Colossians 4:5 "Live wisely among those who are not believers, and make the most of every opportunity."  But I'm taking that snapshot from ancient history and I'm going to make it my present and future reality.

That's my future 2016...what's yours?
